"we both want to reign in the excesses of wall street." voters will draw the ultimate distinction at the polls. danielle nottingham, cbs news, durham, new hampshire. the republican candidates gather for a debate on saturday. in school watch... the public schools overcrowding and repair needs committee met tonight-- to take a closer look at which taxes they'll ask voters to raise this november. the goal of this committee... is to raise 781 million dollars over ten years... to build new schools... and repair old ones. they'll do it through increases in sales taxes... or a combination of sales and property taxes. tonight-- we got a closer look at how much each option would cost the average taxpayer...

if it's just a sales tax increase... the rate would go from 7.725 percent in washoe county... to 8.265 percent... just over a half-a- percent bump. that's estimated to cost the average citizen an additional 7 dollars and 26 cents a month. if it's a combination of sales and property taxes... sales would go up .425 percent... an additional 5.71 per month... and property taxes would go up 5.5 cents for every dollar of assessed value... that would add between 1.35... and 8 dollars per month... to your bill. both options drew mixed reviews from committee members and public commenters... so the committee decided to delay a vote until their next meeting. the committee has until april second to draft the ballot question. marinello beauty school closed all 56 locations in the country today...including the campus in reno. the nationwide closure comes after the u.s. department of education pulled funding for marinello this week, accusing the school of several

amanda ketchledge joins us live in the studio with more after talking to students and staff at the school in reno today. amanda-- landon-- more than 100 students could possibly not be graduating on time... and as many as a dozen instructors are now out of work. but the marinello students and teachers we talked to say they will forever be a family, despite this school closure. debbie lamonica, cosmetology instructor still laura mendoza student still "this is our home. marinello! screams." students and staff shared one last group photo inside the school thursday night. their happiness, though, turned to sadness as they packed up their supplies and belongings. "we're a family here." the department of education is investigating the school for allegedly requesting federal aid for students based on fabricated high school diplomas, charging students for excessive overtime and other misrepresentation . debbie lamonica, cosmetology instructor: "this is not a problem we have in this campus. it was dribbled down from corporate. we all got closed

the school's spokesperson released this statement to channel 2 news. saying quote "we have compelling evidence that we think would have satisfied the department's concerns and we asked repeatedly for two months to be able to respond.... "...but the department waited until we were past the point of no return financially to allow us any opportunity to respond to its unfounded allegations." end quote. laura mendoza, student: "this is laura mendoza, student: "this is our education. our education to do our career." 43-hundred students nationwide are trying to figure out their student: "the instructor is not going to be the same, and the schooling is not going to be the same so it's going to be a hard students individually to see whether they can transfer or apply for their licenses. but the state board adds that certain schools only accept a minimum amount of hours and some students are too close to the end, so many of their credits are not being accepted. gary landry, executive director

cosmetology: "those are particularly going to be particularly hard to place." stephanie davison is only 200 hours away from getting her license, so for now she's putting away her graduation cap. stephanie davidson, student: "it kind of gives me a little bit of a setback but i'm determined. i will finish my hours one way or another. and get my license." school officials say they are working with other schools to arrange partnerships to help students continue their education. meetings will be held next week to allow students to receive their transcripts and other paperwork. covering school watch, amanda ketchledge, channel 2 news. run crash in carson city. carson city sheriff's office deputies responded to reports of a hit and run just before 8 o'clock tonight in the area of brown street and edmonds drive... where they learned the suspect vehicle was a yellow ford 150 pickup. shortly after, deputies found that pickup at a gas station on college parkway near research way. as officers approached... the suspect vehicle rammed the police s-u-v and fled eastbound on college parkway at high speeds. after passing college parkway and airport road, the suspect vehicle lost control and crashed onto carson airport property. the driver -- described as a hispanic adult male -- was killed. investigators say the ford was reported stolen about 4 o-clock this afternoon -- in the same area as the initial reported hit and run. college parkway, from airport road to nye lane will remain closed for most of tonight. today reno police sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for hitting a police officer with his car back in august. in december, russell roberts

of attempted murder on a police officer and battery with a deadly weapon on a police officer. authorities say roberts drove his car toward an officer who was responding to an unrelated service call on arlington avenue in august. he will be eligible for parole 4 years after he starts serving his sentence, which will begin after he finishes a 4-year sentence for a drug charge. the district attorney's office has released a report that found an officer involved shooting was justified. according to the report... sparks police detectives shot and killed james bowman back in september of 20-14 near sutro and ninth streets. when they confronted him, the d-a's office says bowman refused the command to surrender and eventually walked toward detectives while removing a loaded handgun from his waistband. he passed away at the hospital and an autopsy revealed he had amphetamines and methamphetamine in his blood. reno police are looking for a

looking around the nation now... today florida governor rick scott declared a health emergency in a fifth florida county-- related to the zika virus. florida is now reporting at

in all, more than 51 people in 12 states and the district of columbia have developed the virus... which is suspected of causing serious birth defects. governor scott says conditions in the sunshine state make it especially prone to the virus... gov. rick scott: "we're a state that has the mosquitoes that are similar to the mosquitoes that carry this so it is better to get ahead of this." scott has asked the centers for disease control and prevention to rush 1,000 zika testing kits to the state. florida plans to buy 4,000 more. today mourners gathered to remember nicole lovell -- the 13- year-old virginia girl found murdered near a north carolina road. meanwhile 19-year old natalie keepers -- one of two people charged in lovell's murder -- appeared for a bond hearing today. the prosecutor, mary pettitt, says keepers and fellow virginia tech student david eisenhauer carefully planned the girl's-- who he met online.

murdered january 27th... the same day she climbed out her bedroom window to meet eisenhauer. prosecutors claim keepers and eisenhauer put the girl's body into the trunk of eisenhauer's lexus... and drove to north carolina, where they dumped it by the side of a road. pettitt says keepers confessed to her role in the girl's death. a sexual assault case against bill cosby in pennsylvania will move forward. today a pennsylvania judge refused to dismiss the criminal case after a two-day hearing. cosby's lawyers claimed there was a longstanding deal not to prosecute. back in december, cosby was arrested and charged with drugging and assaulting a former temple university employee at his suburban philadelphia home back in 2004. cosby's team says they will appeal the judge's ruling. and in another courtroom in washington d-c... former pharmaceutical c-e-o martin shkreli appeared for his hearing

the man who many point to as the face of runaway drug prices was subpoenaed to testify before congress... but refused to answer many questions. rep. jason chaffetz: "do you think you've done anything wrong?"
